Party Potential: Festive Dressing Begins

Now that the holiday season has arrived, it is impossible to ignore it. I've already received more invitations to events this year than I usually receive. Is everyone planning to party until they pass out as we all look into the Brexit abyss? Even though this is lovely, the idea of dressing up makes my heart ache. I'm searching for a dress that will be comfortable to wear while working hard and get me through.

Red Party Dress

This week, when I was rushing around Selfridges, I found myself at the Me + Em section (it sometimes happens). I adore how this brand has a mature appearance yet is nevertheless sloppy, contemporary, and unconcerned. Nothing shouts Christmas more than red; just the colour itself signals that you're in a festive mood. A red collection caught my eye on the rails. You could pair one of those gorgeous shirts from Kitri, which I mentioned last week, with a lovely pair of wide-leg evening trousers in thick, double-sided crimson satin crepe.

Evening Dress

However, the evening shirt dress with its sporty satin sleeve stripe and zip front detail stole my heart. You can complete the look by pairing it with some stylish sneakers (perhaps something a little more glam than these white ones). It can also be machine washed (just writing this makes me feel like my mum, circa 1970 talking about anything bought from M&S).

Boden Partywear

If you want a little more leopard print, Boden offers a nice holiday dress that I believe will be a popular choice this season (you'll see it all over Barnes). I enjoy the Boden partywear selection every year, which this year is all about Meghan Markle and The Vampire's Wife. Although the velvet is always a terrific value, this year it comes in a printed velvet with a bird pattern. I called to ask if they were still making the velvet trouser suit in cheerful colours. The red dress currently prevails. If I come across anything better, I'll let you know.
